The ABOHNS Announces the Election of New 2024 Leadership

Meet the New President, President-Elect, Treasurer, New Directors, and New Members of the Exam Council

The American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the election of new leadership. Beginning March 2024, the ABOHNS leaders introduced below have assumed their new roles.

Jeffrey M. Bumpous, MD
President

Dr. Jeffrey Bumpous is the Interim Dean of the University of Louisville School of Medicine and Vice President for Academic Medical Affairs. He holds the J. Samuel Bumgardner Endowed Professorship in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders at the University of Louisville School of Medicine where he also served as Chair. He is lead or co-author of more than 80 journal articles and scientific book chapters.

Dr. Bumpous previously served as President of the Society of University Otolaryngologists (SUO) and the Association of Academic Departments of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AADO). He has served as Associate Editor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Surgery and Laryngoscope. He also has served in leadership roles in the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS), the Kentucky Society of Otolaryngology, the Louisville Otolaryngologic Society, and other professional organizations. Dr. Bumpous was certified by ABOHNS in 1994 and elected to the ABOHNS Board of Directors in 2015.

Ronald B. Kuppersmith, MD, MBA
President-Elect

Dr. Ronald Kuppersmith is in private practice in College Station, Texas, and serves as Chief Executive Officer of ENT Specialty Partners. He also holds an appointment as a Clinical Professor of Surgery at Texas A&M University College of Medicine. He has served as the President of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and the Texas Association of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (TAO).

Dr. Kuppersmith has an interest in innovation in health care. He has served as a founder, inventor, investigator, advisor, and board member to help bring new technologies to otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. Dr. Kuppersmith was certified by ABOHNS in 2000, elected to the ABOHNS Board of Directors in 2017, and served as Treasurer 2020-2024.

Jennifer Parker Porter, MD
Treasurer

Dr. Jennifer Parker Porter is a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, and the founder and Medical Director of Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Porter is a Clinical Associate Professor at Georgetown University Medical Center, Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. She has authored numerous book chapters and journal articles on rhinoplasty and ethnic variations in facial plastic surgery.

Dr. Porter served as the Interim Group Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) and has served her community and the public through elected leadership positions on several boards.

Dr. Porter is certified by both the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, (ABFPRS) and the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS). She was certified by ABOHNS in 1998 and elected to the ABOHNS Board of Directors in 2021. 

David O. Francis, MD, MS
Director

Dr. David Francis is Associate Professor of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is Vice Chair of Academic Affairs and Professional Development and Associate Residency Program Director in the Division of Otolaryngology. Additionally, he is the Associate Director of the Wisconsin Surgical Outcomes Research Program (WiSOR) in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Francis is a Fellow of the American Laryngological Association (ALA), the American Broncho-Esophagological Association (ABEA), and The Triological Society.  

Dr. Francis participates in guideline development for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) and has had editorial responsibilities for several journals. He is a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded surgeon-scientist with expertise in health services research, survey design, and patient outcomes. He is a standing member of the Organization and Delivery of Health Services NIH study section and serves additionally in ad hoc roles on other study sections. He has received several awards for clinical and research mentorship. Dr. Francis was certified by ABOHNS in 2011.

Diego A. Preciado, MD, PhD
Director

Dr. Diego Preciado is a Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at George Washington University and Chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology at Children’s National Hospital in Washington DC. His clinical practice is focused on pediatric airway reconstruction, childhood hearing loss and cochlear implants, and velopharyngeal insufficiency.

Dr. Preciado has authored more than 165 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 22 book chapters, and three edited books. He has served as President of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO) and the International Society for Otitis Media (ISOM). In 2020 he was awarded the Robert Ruben Scientific Achievement Award from the Society for Ear, Nose, and Throat Advancement in Children (SENTAC). Dr. Preciado was certified by ABOHNS in 2003.

Gavin Setzen, MD
Director

Dr. Gavin Setzen is President and CEO of Albany ENT and Allergy Services, PC, an independent private practice in Albany, New York. Additionally, Dr. Setzen is Clinical Associate Professor at Albany Medical College and Chief of the Otolaryngology Division at St. Peter’s Hospital, St. Peter’s Health Partners.

Dr. Setzen has served as the President of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), the New York State Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission CT Imaging (IACT).

His clinical and research interests include the medical and surgical management of nasal and sinus disorders, otolaryngic allergy, thyroid and parathyroid surgery and point-of-service CT imaging. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has delivered scientific lectures and presentations at numerous national and international meetings. Dr. Setzen was certified by ABOHNS in 1998.
